The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has embarked on the testing phase of an emergency cell broadcast technology developed by C-DOT. This groundbreaking technology aims to promptly alert people in the event of natural disasters, according to a statement from a senior government official.
As part of the testing process, a sample message with the title 'Emergency alert: Severe' was successfully sent to subscribers on the Jio and BSNL networks on a recent Thursday.
C-DOT's Chief Executive Officer, Rajkumar Upadhyay, informed PTI that this technology is currently only available through a foreign vendor. Consequently, C-DOT has taken the initiative to develop it in-house.
"The cell broadcast technology is currently under active development, and its deployment will empower NDMA to send disaster alerts directly to mobile phone screens," Mr. Upadhyay said.
Furthermore, he emphasized the necessity of creating various versions of cell broadcast messages for seamless propagation through telecom networks. Mr. Upadhyay also mentioned that trials for this technology will be conducted nationwide.
Android users on the Jio, BSNL, and Vodafone Idea networks reported receiving a message with the following content:
"This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE sent through the Cell Broadcasting System by the Department of Telecommunication, Government of India. Please disregard this message, as no action is required from your end. This message has been sent to TEST the Pan-India Emergency Alert System being implemented by the National Disaster Management Authority. Its objective is to enhance public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies."
The messages were sent in both Hindi and English languages.
