sports Glenn Maxwell's Record-Breaking Heroics in the 2023 World Cup: A Historic Double Century and More

Glenn Maxwell's breathtaking innings against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup will be etched in cricketing history as one of the most remarkable performances ever witnessed. Facing a daunting 292-run chase with Australia at 49/4, and then sinking further to 91/7, Maxwell played the innings of a lifetime, guiding Australia to a thrilling three-wicket victory at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Maxwell's innings was nothing short of a miracle, as he blazed his way to an unbeaten double century, scoring a phenomenal 201* with 21 boundaries and 10 towering sixes. Here, we delve into the extraordinary records he shattered during this memorable match:

  1. First Australian to Score a Double Century: Glenn Maxwell made history by becoming the first Australian cricketer to achieve an ODI double century. His astonishing 201* marked the 11th instance of a double century in 50-over cricket, surpassing Shane Watson's previous record of 185* set against Bangladesh in 2011.

  2. Highest Individual Score in an ODI Run-Chase: Maxwell's incredible performance also secured the record for the highest individual score in an ODI run-chase. He outshone Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman, who had previously held the record with 193 against South Africa in 2021. Moreover, Maxwell's double century exceeded Charles Coventry's 194 against Bangladesh in 2009, establishing it as the highest score ever achieved by a non-opener in ODI cricket history.

  3. Second-Fastest Double Century in ODI History: What sets Maxwell's feat apart is the incredible speed at which he reached his double century, taking just 128 balls. This achievement makes it the second-fastest double century in ODI history, with India's Ishan Kishan holding the record for the fastest double century in just 126 balls against Bangladesh the previous year.

  4. Prolific Six-Hitter: Maxwell's proficiency in hitting sixes was on full display, as he smashed ten towering sixes during the match. This performance elevated his tally of World Cup career sixes to 33, placing him third on the list of players with the most World Cup sixes. He trails behind Indian captain Rohit Sharma (45) and West Indies cricket legend Chris Gayle (49).

In addition to these monumental records, Maxwell's double century also marked only the third instance of a double century in ODI Cricket World Cups, joining the ranks of Chris Gayle's 215 for West Indies in 2015 and Martin Guptill's 237 for New Zealand in the same year.

Glenn Maxwell's historic performance not only saved Australia from a potential upset but also solidified his place in cricketing history as one of the sport's most remarkable all-rounders. His incredible innings will be remembered for years to come, and it will serve as a source of inspiration for cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
